Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has made frequent appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as Larry King, CNN, and other networks, recommended Reiki as one of his favorite complementary therapies on his own popular TV show, The Dr. Oz Show.

“Try Reiki. This alternative medicine treatment can manipulate your energy and cure what ails you.”

— Dr. Mehmet Oz

Dr. Oz began by saying “I've worked and trained in some of the finest medical schools and hospitals in this country, and I know first hand the amazing miracles we can achieve with modern Western medicine, but I also know that for centuries, people around the world have developed alternative therapies that treat the body, mind, and the soul. So today I'm revealing my ultimate alternative medicine secrets. If you've got a medical problem you can't solve, you may find the answer in the next few minutes.”

The show, which aired in the first week of January, featured several complementary medicine practices and Dr. Oz, who's wife Lisa is a Reiki Master, introduced Reiki saying “The next one I'm going to talk about is one of my favorites. We've been using it in the Oz family for years.”

Joining Dr. Oz for a live Reiki demonstration was Reiki Master and author Pamela Miles. Pamela, who has been in the operating theater with Dr. Oz to give Reiki to patients during surgery, gave an overview of Reiki while treating an audience member to alleviate a headache. “Do you feel anything?” Dr. Oz asked the audience member. “Yes, my headache's going away,” she replied.

We were pleased to see Pamela Miles, who has done so much in the medical community to present Reiki as a credible integrative therapy, featured on the show. (I attended a medical Reiki training seminar given by Pamela at UCI Medical Campus a while back, and can personally attest to the quality of her work in this field.)

Dr. Oz also expanded his views on energy medicine saying that he believes it “may be ultimately the most important alternative medicine treatment of all. And we are embarking on this whole new vista of opportunities; it broadens dramatically the spectrum of where we might be able to go in our bodies, and this is the area of energy medicine.”

In summing up, Dr. Oz presented his top 3 “Oz's Orders” with Reiki taking top spot: “First off, try Reiki,” said Dr. Oz, “This alternative medicine treatment can manipulate your energy and cure what ails you.” He also recommended boosting the metabolism and checking blood pressure. “Those are my Doctor's Orders,” concluded Dr. Oz.

Following the show, which currently averages an estimated 3.5 million viewers, we've experienced a sharp increase in interest in Reiki from the public. For many, it has validated the belief that although Western medicine has developed to the point where it can cure many ailments, it doesn't yet have the answers to everything, and that there is a place for integrative therapies that can help treat the whole of the body; not just the physical body and associated symptoms, but also the mind and soul (or spiritual center) along with it.

Scientifically, energy medicine is in its infancy, but the principles behind it have been practiced in many cultures and in many different guises worldwide for hundreds or thousands of years. From Yoga to acupuncture to the martial arts to Reiki — they all speak of an underlying energy that can be used to improve overall health, vitality, and state of mind.

We (perhaps obviously) endorse Reiki, but not out of a sense that any of the other complementary therapies mentioned or highlighted in the show are in any way invalid, rather, because we feel that Reiki is a very simple practice that can easily be learned or experienced, and one that can be readily integrated into our typically busy lifestyles. So echoing Dr. Oz's words, we invite everyone to find a qualified Reiki practitioner and simply “try Reiki”.
