What is a Reiki session like?

A closer look at what goes on when you enter the room with the massage table... This is intended as a guide to those unfamiliar with receiving Reiki treatments and who would like to know a little more about how a typical session progresses. Relax! It's really a very nice experience!

For those new to Reiki, knowing what to expect from a healing session can be a comforting thing. So here is my guide for first–timers everywhere.

The Reiki session

Okay, so let's imagine that you have decided that you would like to give Reiki a try. Here's a typical view of what will happen when you visit:

Be comfortable

First things first — if you can, try to wear clothing that is a loose and comfortable fit for you. When you arrive, the session will be given to you on a massage table and you will be fully clothed for the duration, so it is best to arrive wearing something that is comfortable. You will be asked to remove your shoes before lying down however.

When you arrive

I will greet you at the appointed time, and you will be shown to the private treatment room where we can talk a little bit about your background, your reasons for wanting to receive Reiki, what you can expect from the treatment, and go over how the healing will progress and the sensations you may feel during the session. I will also answer any questions or concerns you may have at this time.

During the Reiki session

Once you are comfortable, I will ask you to remove your shoes and to lie down on the massage table. You may also at this time remove items such as your watch, a heavy belt, or jewelry if this will make you feel more comfortable for the duration of the session.

Gentle and soothing music will be played throughout the session to help you to relax.

Reiki is a balancing of the natural energy (the same underlying energy known as Ki or Chi) in your body so it is not a massage technique in the traditional sense. Instead it is administered through a number of special hand positions held just above different areas of the body, including the head, torso, arms, hands, legs, and feet. Each position will typically be held for a few minutes, but varies from treatment to treatment. If there is a need to apply light pressure to your body in one of these areas, I will ask your permission before doing so.

What you may feel during the Reiki session

Each Reiki session is totally unique for each person, and the range of possible sensations you may feel during your particular session is almost impossible to say. The Reiki healing energy always directs itself to where it is needed, and does whatever is necessary to heal the recipient at every level that is required, be it physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual.

Some common sensations that you may experience are as follows: sensations of warmth or heat occurring near to the practitioners hands, tingling sensations, seeing lights or colors or images, experiencing emotional feelings, such as happiness, deep relaxation, or the release of emotional issues that have somehow been affecting you, whether you were conscious of those feelings or not.

It is also very common for people to fall peacefully asleep by the end of the session.

After the Reiki session

As the session ends, I will bring you gently out of your relaxed state, and you can take the time you need to adjust before getting up from the table — some people feel a little dizzy or “spacey” after the session. This is normal, so just take the time you need before getting up and it will pass.

It is common to feel a sense of wholeness and well–being after the treatment, and a lot of people have broad smiles on their faces when they get up. However, if the Reiki has triggered an emotional release due to some mental or emotional trauma, there may be tears instead — this is perfectly normal, and a sign that Reiki is healing an emotional issue. If there is something you wish to say or let out at this point (or indeed at any point during the session), then do so — this is a part of the Reiki healing, but you will never be forced to say or express anything you do not wish to. When the time is right, it will happen.

Reiki is a cleansing process for the body too, and if you take a series of treatments it is not uncommon for the healing to trigger a release of impurities or toxins from the body. Any such release will always occur through the body's own natural processes, so over the next few days you may notice this as an increase in perspiration for example, or perhaps a runny nose, or an increase in your normal bowel movement. Any such experience will be short–lived, and should be welcomed as a positive sign that the Reiki energy has targeted what it needed to.

How many sessions do I need?

For things like minor pain or stress relief, or for simple, deep relaxation, one session will usually achieve this and you can arrange to have it done whenever you feel the need.

For more complex issues, the best results are usually achieved when Reiki is performed in cycles of 4 to 6 treatments. This allows time for the body to adjust and work with the healing energy, and most people find that by the end of these cycles the healing experience is far more intense.

Reiki will always heal you at some level — even if you choose only to receive one healing. But to completely heal or relieve a problem or issue that has taken a lifetime to build up can take many sessions. Ultimately it is you that will decide how many sessions you really need.

With Reiki, there is also no concept of accidentally receiving too many treatments or somehow “overdosing” on it. Simply put, the Reiki energy will either go to where it is needed to balance the needs of the body, or not at all. In practice however, the body will almost always receive some benefit from each treatment.
