This is the picture that prompted the interview with Kim. Kim often trains alone on the beach and practices a branch of Iaido called Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido. Here she demonstrates a waza (form) known as Shinken (real sword). Practice traditionally begins with Shinken in honour of the founder of Iaido, Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu, 1550.

As with Reiki, hara (or tanden) forms an integral part of the practice of Iaido.

The katana used is a practice blade, “it is sharp enough to ‘sing’ but not so sharp you lose limbs,” explains Kim.
