Mount Kurama (or Kurama Yama), is a mountain which lays north–west of the city of Kyoto in Japan, and is often referred to as “the birthplace of Reiki”. It is believed that Mikao Usui practiced and developed his teachings here, and that he embarked on a 21 day spiritual retreat on the mountain. It is reported that Usui spent time meditating near the top of the mountain at a site called Osugi Gongen near a great sacred tree said to be an incarnation of the god Maoson.

Mt. Kurama (translated as “horse saddle mountain”) has long been regarded as a “power spot” on account of the energy that may be felt there. It has a long history of pilgrimages and remains today a popular place for meditation.

Mount Kurama is well known for other reasons too. Among them, it is also said to be the home of Sojobo, king of the tengu, who taught swordsmanship to Minamoto no Yoshitsune, general of the Minamoto samurai clan. [Source: Wikipedia.]
