About Me and Reiki
Smile! Go on — smile right now! I don't know about you, but I am a person who loves to smile. I like to keep things simple and straightforward. No complications. The simple things in life really do mean the most to me.
“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude.”
— Denis Waitley
Smiling aside, and like a lot of you out there, I am a busy mom with a busy life and a busy work schedule. Being able to take a few precious moments to relax and unwind, to share life's ups and downs with those close to me, and to enjoy nurturing little ones on their journey to becoming bigger ones, are just a few of the things that keep me focused on the more rewarding things in life.
I first heard about Reiki a few years ago when my interests took me into exploring ways of de–stressing myself after a hard day's work. I work as a school teacher teaching young kids, so I think most of you will have an idea of how challenging a day at this office can be.
“A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen into smiles.”
— Washington Irving
But I'd like to share with you the reason behind my stress; the true reason for why Reiki became something that changed my life forever...
My Personal Reiki Story
The stress I was feeling was the culmination of an agonizing series of personal events, a part of which left me with little faith in our traditional medical system. The precise nature of those events remains personal, but one of the consequences was that I began to suffer from a very painful medical condition that no specialist seemed to be able to diagnose, let alone cure. The condition manifested itself as an intense abdominal pain that struck me down with excruciating pain daily — sometimes more frequently — and without warning; day or night. For over a year I subjected myself to the doctors' seemingly endless tests and examinations, endured countless prescriptions for drugs and courses of treatment, and the result was always the same: the pain would not go away, and my anxiety and stress continued to increase. I began to wonder if it was my diet — some doctor's said to try not to eat this, or to have only that, or that it was doubtless an allergy to such and such, but with each medically imposed diet I began to feel more and more like a guinea pig, at best trialing each doctor's next best guess at what might be wrong. The painful bouts continued until my desperation meant I could no longer hold back the tears during my medical visits. The doctors promised me they would do everything they could to find the cause, but the simple fact was that they simply did not know what was wrong. My life was unbearably miserable.
The pain ended the day I went to receive Reiki from three different practitioners who worked on me in unison. The session lasted no more than an hour, but as soon as it was over, I immediately felt that something within me had changed. I continued with more treatments, and to this day I cannot fully explain how or why Reiki was able to put right what was so very wrong with me, but the certainty was that it did. The pain did not return.
So what is Reiki?
There are several schools of thought, but for the most part Reiki is described as a Japanese method for balancing the natural energy of the body — the same energy that is often referred to as Ki, Chi, or Prana in other cultures. Reiki is an entirely natural and complementary form of therapy. It is not a substitute for qualified medical advice however, so you should always consult with your doctor or care provider.
Many people find that Reiki leads to increased relaxation, well–being, and improved health, while others are reporting that they have found Reiki to be beneficial in treating other conditions.
You can find more information on my talk page Yadira Talks, which has lots of Reiki stories and articles, including:
- “What is Reiki?” which provides a more in–depth look at what Reiki is, and what it is not.
- “Reiki in Hospitals — A round–up of Reiki in Medical Settings” which takes a look at some major hospitals and clinics which are reporting that Reiki therapy is proving to be very beneficial in the treatment of patients.
- “What is a Reiki session like?” that provides an overview of what to expect when you come along for a Reiki session.
